When we received the invitation from Jasmin to go to 44 @ The Row for the cocktail pairing a few weeks ago, the first thing that came to mind was, “Okay, Tanggachi (April) is not here anymore. Who can I invite to come with me who can help take good pictures AND enjoy this fantastic looking cocktail platter prepared by Chef Chester Low?”

*LIGHTBULB*

“I’ll invite Vig!”
Vig is a photographer who runs Obscura Festival and an absolute delight to hang out with.
(You’re still my No. 1, April!)

I told Jasmin and her reply was, “That sounds great. Pics will be amazing!”

So last Friday, Vig and I had a rendezvous at 44. Upon arrival, CK (the Head Mixer at 44) explained to me about the platter.

“Basically there are four courses; the first would be the Irish oyster with Yuzu Sake jelly with some edible flowers as garnishing. This would be the appetiser before you go on to the next one. The second course would be quite mainstream. It’s something like an Old Fashioned but we infuse it with cigar smoke from real cigar leaves. There will be a hint of cigar flavour, and we serve it with cherry Heering flavour liqueur jelly on top so it’s a blend of masculine (bitter and strong) and feminine (sweet and soft). Immediately after, take the Citrus Black Caviar to cleanse your palate.”

I couldn’t wait to see the platter!

“Moving on, we have the Jungle Bird (a signature cocktail at 44), a Malaysian-born cocktail but this time, we serve it in a coupe glass with pineapple-flavoured ice and Hibiscus caviar, and top it up with Rooibos Vanilla foam so it gives more aroma. The last one would be the Godfather cocktail which we turned into a form of ice cream.”

When the platter arrived, I was blown away. It looked so pretty!

This is the platter! A brainchild of Chef Chester Low. Isn’t it prettyyyyyy??!!

Vig: Fuyooo! What is this? Looks so atas (fancy)!
Baby: Yeah man. Oh, well… ENJOY!

Guest Edition - Chef Chester @ 44-12a

First course: Irish oyster served with Yuzu sake jelly and edible flower. Upon my first slurp, an instant rush of tanginess hit my palate. The oyster itself had a generous suppleness to it, with the edible flowers contributing an interesting contrast of texture.

Second course: Cigar smoked Old Fashioned, served with Heering liqueur jelly and black citrus caviar. The bitterness of the whisky marries very well with the sweetness of the liqueur jelly. The way to enjoy this pairing is to take a sip of the drink and followed by a nibble of jelly. The black citrus caviar tasted so refreshing and it’s also a palate cleanser to ready yourself for the next course.

I was just looking throught the folders of pictures from summer, tons of which i haven’t blogged about yet (need to lock myself away to write them all once i move house!)

After my trip to the States with Yishyene in June, we flew back to London from Las Vegas. From there, i was to embark on a 4-week adventure in Europe through a few cities i wanted to hit up, especially Berlin and Porto cos i’d never been but heard so many good things about!

I think Yishyene told me about Skyscanner a few years ago and i started using it since for when i travel through a few places at once. It’s a free search engine website where you just fill in your departure and arrival places + dates, and it lists down the cheapest flights you can take provided by different airlines from around the world. And you don’t buy the flight from Skyscanner, they direct you to the airline or travel agent website. It’s freaking awesome.

I used it to search up prices for my four flights, and booked seats on Norwegian Air, Vueling Airlines, and British Airways.

My route in July was:

Over the weekend we headed to their country house in Reigate. I love that house and its garden.
I’ve spent so many weekends there since i was 6!
Can you spot Goldie my hoop? I was playing with her in the sunshine that day.

The biggest reason i keep on returning to London a few times a year is because my family is there, especially my Mama! She’s getting older so i try to see her as much as i can.

Aunt G and Uncle Mark and i, during a party they threw with their ex-interns at the office one day so we could all drink and be merry. It ended at 3am with Aunt G and me heading to the Savage Beauty exhibition at the V&A the next morning. I cried a little in the exhibition because the work was so exquisite, i couldn’t help myself.

BERLIN

I’ve been hearing so many great things about how Berlin is a creative hub and how the energy there is so different, it’s true! It all seems very vibrant and dynamic, most of the people i met there are into music or fashion and there’s this wonderful regard for design in Berlin. To get a taste of different neighbourhoods across my one-week stay there, i stayed in Mitte (above) and Kreuzberg (below). Mitte is known as a classier and cool neighbourhood, while Kreuzberg is a bit more raw.

4-Berlin Fashion Week Marina Hoermenseder SS16 MBFW

Went to a few shows for Berlin Fashion Week! This was at Marina Hoermanseder’s.

4-Berlin-Fashion-Week-Pearly-Wong-SS16-MBFW

Malaysian designer Pearly Wong was also showing there, and we went to a couple of fashion week parties together. I think we were the only two tiny Asians around most of the time. Berlin was the place we reconnected, cos we’ve known each other for 10 years (we both used to work in promotions when we were in college!). This girl is the sweetest.

LaughingBlueFairy bids April bye bye

Comments (3) La la la, Musings & Personal

For now. Come back and work for us!

April has been interning with us for the past few months and she’s been fantastic.
Baby introduced her to Claudia after an event one day as, “My star intern.”
And Claudia went, “Come work for me.”
When i heard that, i immediately blurted, “Bitch!”

If you steal April, i think Baby will burn your office down. XD

Anywayyyy NOBODY gets to have April cos she returns to London next week to continue her studies.
Baby and i have been trying to convince her how since the pound is so high, she might as well stay and save her parents money.

April joined us while i was away in the States and Europe over summer, so i barely got much time with her. When i returned, i discovered how Baby and her got on like a house on fire despite their >10 year age gap. They even went on a holiday to Penang together, made up their own hashtag #TerribleTwoTravels, gave each other nicknames (Baby is King, and April is Tanggachi), speak in an Indian accent to each other (i really don’t know how this cropped up), and have sleepovers.

They laugh ALL THE TIME.
They laugh so much, Baby had to go to the doctor late one night last week cos her chest ached and the doctor told her she probably pulled a chest muscle from laughing too hard.

Even her tiny body can’t take the laughing!
Never heard before ok.

Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week KLFW RTW 2015: Alia Bastamam SS16

Comments (0) Fashion, Fashion, Style & Beauty

Alia’s fashion shows have been one of the most popular in the city of late. Every time she has a show; it’s a full house, everyone who knows everyone is there, all the designs blow us away, and we wish we had all the money in the world to buy everything.

Just stop it already Alia, just stop it.
Or actually, don’t. You make me practice the art of letting go of desires.
So that’s probably a good thing, cos i must learn i can’t have everything can i?
OR CAN I?

Wow see how crazy thinking about Alia’s dresses make me.

This season, Alia Bastamam returns to the lightness that inspired her to start her eponymous label in 2011. Long time Alia B fans would be able to recognise her pieces’ signature feel making a comeback, what with light palettes and homage to the SS16 mood of ‘light and bright’.

“Fresh and hopeful,” she says, “are what I want this collection to be. I want to bring back that ease and comfort for my clients because that’s why I came into this industry in the first place – to design and create pieces that I would want to wear myself.”

In collaboration with Volkwagen Malaysia, Ms. Martina Berg (Marketing Director of Volkswagen Group Malaysia) quotes: “Alia is unquestionably one of the most established local designers, whose commitment to timeless and solid design perfectly complements our own philosophies. We are delighted to be exclusively debuting her Spring/Summer 2016 designs at the Volkswagen Fashion Night with Alia Bastamam runway show.”

Pleated fabric becomes the focal point for the latest Alia Bastamam offering – an edged play to the pastel shades of butter and lilac. Loose silhouettes and string details give a free and undone ease for a slight bohemian tone. All shoes are especially designed for the show by Lewre Bespoke.

Launch of KOZO featuring KOZO x Justin Chew at Fabspy

Comments (3) Fashion, Fashion, Style & Beauty

* written by April and Baby *

Joyce: “Hey, Baby… A bit last minute, but would you or April be able to cover the KOZO x Justin Chew event today?”
Baby: “Oh, I’ve actually promised Tianna that I would drop by.”
Joyce: “Great!” *followed by a thumbs-up emoticon*

* Disclaimer: Emoticons are a BIG thing at KinkyBlueFairy. We take it seriously.

Baby: “April…. Event tonight. You’re coming!”
April: “Okay la, King”

[Joyce: Just to give you a heads up… Baby has got April to call her King, and they call me Goddess. Yeah… i don’t know how they come up with this.]

We were really excited to see (and try on) the KOZO & KOZO x Justin Chew collections. Prior to the event, we saw some teasers on KOZO’s Instagram and immediately fell in love with the cross double-breasted crop tank with side trains.

When we got to the Fabspy flagship store in Midvalley, that was the first piece we grabbed from the rack to try on. Baby managed to coerce April into trying (and later buying) a pair of culottes 🙂
[April: She is the devil!]

To give you a bit of background about KOZO, the brand was created by Rin, and is a representation of a new chapter in her life reflecting on her ideology of having something steadfast to hang on to in the midst of all imminent changes that happen.

“Let a KOZO piece be a part of your exploratory journey. Allow us (the brand) to be your constant as you embrace the changes in life,” adds Rin.

Having tried and tested her creations, we believe that the pieces are timeless. The collection is defined by asymmetrical lines, loose silhouettes and clean structures. They can be worn for almost any occasion depending how one styles it- glamorous nights out or casual daywear.

“Where there is a storm, the sun will shine after – where there is light, there will be darkness”
(One cannot be without the other, existing in perfect harmony)

Inspired by this quote, Rin named her debut collection Episode One which translates its essence through the combination of colours and fabrics chosen to represent an experiential journey – from hopeful to sombre, and the embodiment of the co-existence of light and darkness.

“Each piece is inspired with simplicity and fluidity in mind- harmoniously merging structure and wearability, to form seasonless ensembles for any occasion. The debut collection is predominantly in ivory white, pebble grey and off-black with hints of different shades of primary colours. The collection pieces are made up of smooth-to-touch and textured fabrics like 100% Japanese cotton, knit cotton and Sofi High Japan.”

The KOZO x Justin Chew which falls under the Justin Chew Basic line is a befitting partnership. Known for his clean cut silhouettes and wearable everyday pieces, Justin teamed up with KOZO to produce a contemporary collection.

“I imagined that if I was a girl, these would be the sort of basic staples that I would have in my wardrobe,” says Justin.

The collection’s colour palette is a combination of his signature monotone shades with a hint of KOZO’s personality in peach and lavender hues. The fabric chosen in this collection ensure the wearability of these pieces in Malaysian weather without compromising on style.

April: “Ok, Baby… I’ll try them on… but I’m not buying anything.”
Baby: “BUT NICE LA.”
April: “NO, I shouldn’t be shopping. Stop encouraging me!!”
Baby: “You listen to me. I am King.”

Baby: “SEE, nice right? You like right?”

Sigh.. the heart wants what the heart wants.
