EDC seems like ages ago now… cos i’ve been doing SO MUCH every day for the past 2 weeks!
The plan was to fly to London to meet Yishyene, then we both fly to the States for 12 days where we’d attend EDC for 3 days, have one day to recover (it took us 2 days in the end), head off in a rented convertible for Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon for the next 7 days before staying in Vegas for one last night (we ended up staying 2 nights cos we missed our flight :p) and then fly back to London.
We had a really AWESOME trip and it’s the longest time i’ve spent in the States (tho my third time there). I never felt it was a place at the top of my priority list to visit… especially since it’s so far away too. But having been there and seen what a spectacular place it is and heard about even cooler stuff to do there; it’s cemented my desire to return for a longer period of time to carry out a proper exploration (especially LA and San Francisco and all the places in between)!
Just before Ramadan started, I flew to London via Malaysia Airlines, had one night there and then caught a Virgin Atlantic flight from London-Las Vegas with Y. We both worked till the wee hours of the morn before meeting at Gatwick at 9:30am. I felt like a dead person cos only got like 3 hours sleep but was READY to start my hols proper!
While queuing up to buy breakfast at Nando’s, the guy standing in front of me had the tag sticking out of his dress so i helped him tuck it back in. He was obviously the groom-to-be heading to Vegas with his bunch of friends prepared to torture him. He looked a bit odd wearing a spaghetti strap dress over his jeans but he declared he was ‘trying to hold on to his last bit of decency’.
His friend to me: Do you think he should take his pants off?
Me: *looks him up and down* Oh, most definitely. He said he needs his pockets to put his things so i reckon you guys should get him a handbag.
I was thinking how i’d never seen a flyer like that been given out for a flight before… but oh my god, i’d never experienced a flight like the one i got on then. EDC is the biggest dance festival in the States and draws a crowd of 180,000+ people; some who make their way from as far as London (it’s a 10-hour flight from London-Las Vegas) and most of the people on the flight were filled with groups of guys and girls going for their hen/stag night or EDC, or BOTH.
It was utter chaos.
It was like a party bus! Some ppl were getting really rowdy after some drinks, and started walking around trying to pick each other up, and they were so noisy! It was like a bar in the sky. Some loud girls (presumably from Essex) were trying to chat up the guys in front of us, and they were practically shrieking in excitement that Y and i decided to escape our own seats to stand by the stairs for awhile to get some peace and quiet. In the end the flight manager had to cease serving alcohol half way through the flight and make everyone sit down with the seatbelt sign on.
Flying over some gigantic lake in the US
When Y and i walked out of the airport, the heat ‘hit us like a wall’ according to her.
I’ve never experienced heat like i did in Nevada… oh wait, it was pretty damn hot in Utah as well (that story will come in a following post!)
Willy Wonka game in our hotel’s casino
Y and i stayed at the New York New York Hotel, where she’d scored us a free 4-night stay along with our flights via a dance competition she won 😀 We crashed for a few hours and woke up to go out to eat at some weird time like 2AM… It didn’t matter anyway, it’s Vegas! Plus i was already sleeping erratically from two 10-12 hour flights and work patterns, i’ve just learnt to sleep whenever i can :p
The next afternoon we braved the heat outside for a little stroll (we didn’t get much further down the street before retreating to the comfort of the hotel’s AC)

As Joyce is currently on her #KBFsummer15 vacay, Andrew and I became the lucky two to visit 44 @ The Row to try out cocktails and American craft spirits. It was only my second day in the office when I was given this assignment. What? Alcohol during work hours?? YES.
44 is a pop-up bar that was previously set up at Bangsar’s industrial space, APW (Art Printing Works), right by Pulp by Papa Palheta on Jalan Riong. They’ve now moved to The Row – some of you might remember it as Asian Heritage Row. When we got there, it took us a while to to find the bar – we had assumed it was above the row of cafes and restaurants, so we totally missed its sign that was right in front of Mojo, where we got dropped off. Oops!
Searching for 44 was quite an adventure though; we started our trail from the sign and walked along the alley that leads to the back of the shops. It really didn’t look like there was anything there (much less a bar) and it would’ve been pretty scary if it were dark but luckily for us, there was still light. We braved ourselves and walked to the very back of the alley and spotted the discreet “44” sign.
We were greeted by CK, who is the resident mixologist at 44. He basically runs the place. We got there a little before 5pm so they were still in the midst of setting up for the night.
44 is the only bar in Malaysia to serve American craft spirits. Rye whiskey and the infamous moonshine are amongst some of the specials here. The menu here is different from the one they had back at APW and there were SO many things that sounded so great; I was super spoiled for choice.
They also serve bottle aged cocktails which I have personally never seen or heard of before. They ferment the cocktail mix in a jar for a period of time before making the cocktail! And this is all done in-house and in small batches – definitely some good stuff.
The bottles they’re brewed in make them look like magical elixirs. Unfortunately, we didn’t try any because we were both pretty much boozed up after multiple rounds of tasting flights and cocktails.
Just before i left for my #KBFsummer15 trip, KinkyBlueFairy and MadHat did the fashion show and launch for Love Bonito‘s first flagship store in Asia, at Mid Valley Megamall! It was a mad scramble coordinating the F&B, models, sponsors, venue set up… and it was a new level of stress altogether. I did think about Rahul and Livescape and how they organise events for tens of thousands of people… i don’t know how they do it. Mad respect. I think i’d pass out and die from the pressure!
I shot this pic some time in the afternoon during the dry run and in between the make up and hair sessions for the models and celebs who were walking the runway for that evening. We got Siew Wai to do the models, and she popped by for a bit as she had another major show to do at Starhill or something, so i sorta became the mother hen who had to herd everyone back and forth the venue and hair salon on the other side of the mall. I was trying not to stress about the time as everyone had a set block of time for hair and make up… and i knew the schedule by heart cos i was the one who created it!
Everyone had their hair and make up done at Centro Hair Salon in Gardens.
Make up was done by Urban Decay Cosmetics.
I am currently using their ‘Crush’ blusher you see in pic as my every day blush.
It looks like a daring pink but comes out lovely on the cheeks!
Miss Universe Malaysia 2013 Carey Ng aka care bear (cos she has big care bear eyezzz)
Miss World Malaysia 2010 Thanuja Ananthan.
I call her my giraffe. Because i love giraffes and i love her and they are both lanky and tall and oh you know what i mean.
I got my hair and make up done too, and Centro Hair Salon were so diligent as to ensure i had a hair look despite my not being on the runway that evening! Power la.
Just before leaving KL, i was invited to The Majestic Hotel for a preview of their Festive Variety Dinner (buka puasa buffet). I love The Majestic, it’s one of my favourite hotels in the city. I recently had a brilliant Sunday there with Rahul spending hours in the bar, chilling by the pool and going for a session at the Majestic Spa.
The initial plan for the raya buffet was to dress up and go there with Baby for a Fridate night out, but she fell sick so i invited Calvin to join me instead. It’s been close to a year since we’ve met up as he’s been away in LA doing some styling, and was the perfect person to join me cos he’s been missing Malay food too!
Before having dinner, we had a cocktail at the bar at The Smoke House and were pleasantly surprised at the 1-for-1 price (that happens every evening till 8!)
And then it was time to dig in.
The festive banquet dinner is held on Level 3 of the hotel. It serves up an array of local and international cuisine, with a focus on classic Malay dishes due to the month of Ramadan. I was so excited to try dishes that even i’d never experienced before, as the spread is a culmination of generations’ old recipes and traditional culinary knowledge pooled together by Chef Zaidi and his team, coming up to more than a hundred classic Malay dishes!
Kerabu Kerang bersama Taugeh – cockels with bean sprouts
Ikan Bilis bersama Kacang Sambal -fried anchovies with chilli paste and nuts
Rempeyek ikan bilis, keropok ikan, malinjau, and keropok udang – fish crackers of diff flavours
Masak lemak siput sedut
I did my best trying a little of every dish (well, as many as i could, there were SO many!) but some were too delicious to have just a little, so i ended up taking more of it to eat…
