Headlining acts are Art Vs Science, and The Gossip!!!

ahgroomgoss_1

After an epiphany at a Daft Punk concert,
high school buddies Dan Mac, Jim Finn and Dan W. formed the band in 2008.
They decided to make dance music without the use of computers or decks,
and SOMEHOW managed to get booked for gigs before they composed a single song.
Undeterred, they wrote 7 songs in 48 hours.

Since then they’ve played at Parklife, Falls, Good Vibrations and many more.
In 2009, they hit No. 6 on the iTunes download charts and No. 1 on the iTunes Dance charts.

[copied from press release]
Art vs. Science’s unique style, which utilises dual keyboards and drums, has been likened to Muse, Daft Punk and The Presets, albeit, with a rockier edge.
Their live shows, high on spectacle and energy, have been known to include inflatable penguins and other sea creatures, which fans notoriously bring out for performances of the song ‘Flippers’.
As testament to their undeniable popularity, Art vs. Science were nominated in the ‘Breakthrough Artist – Single’ category for the 2009 ARIA Awards.

Who doesn’t recognise Beth Ditto’s voice from The Gossip?!

ahgroomgoss_3

[from press release, sorry la, damn busy!] The young indie trio broke-through with 2006’s Standing In The Way Of Control, which reached #1 on the UK indie chart and #22 on the UK album chart while the title track became widely associated with the popular UK teen drama, “Skins.”

The success of “Standing In The Way Of Control” and the Gossip’s incandescent performances rapidly established newcomer Beth Ditto as a cultural icon in the UK — she was named the NME’s Coolest Person In Rock (in one of her four cover appearances), took home the Glamour Awards’ 2008 International Artist Of The Year, appeared on the cover of the premiere issue of Love magazine, and is a much-sought-after guest on UK television.
Beth and the Gossip’s music were becoming recognized in the UK and Europe as a major force.

Myra’s Hen’s Night @ Awanmulan Seremban

Comments (8) Nature, Seremban

Myra wanted to spend her hen’s night doing something different from the typical tramping about bars,
so a dozen girls gathered to have a BBQ at Awanmulan,
a new forest chalet that’s in the same area as Dusun.

I thought it was a brilliant idea…
the whole point of having a hen’s night is to SPEND TIME with all your girlfriends anyway, before the whole shebang of marriage gets you so excited to stay at home that a girlie holiday is not high on the priority list.
In fact, i think if i were to have a hen’s night, i’m just gonna have a girlie holiday!

The rest planned to leave at 9:30am… as did i.
Till i had such a tiring week that i decided to go later.
It’s my first proper chance to sleep more than 6 hours and i really need to catch up on some kip!
So Didi, Sueann and i left at 2:30pm.
Ok fine, we left at 3:30pm.
Before we even got on the highway,
Didi and i exchanged a semi-sharp sentence with each other,
and i exclaimed, “Oh god, we haven’t even been in the car with each other for 15 minutes and we’re fighting -_-“
[shit i just thought about how we’re going to spend FOUR DAYS with each other in Singapore this weekend for F1…]

Anyway it started storming like crazy and all our GPS stopped working,
resulting in a slight flurry of are-we-going-the-right-way.
Didi was navigator… while Sueann… studied the blue ball moving on the map in fascination like a cat.

Finally arrived at destination at 6pm.

The whole block above is for guests.
Top floor has 8 beds for RM800. RM75 per extra mattress.
Bottom has a couple of bedrooms (i may be stating it wrongly here!)
As you can see, the top floor has a huge patio for BBQ and sunbathing.

bawanmulan_8

One of the top floor bedrooms on left,
corridor on right.
Bedrooms are in dorm-style,
so Awanmulan is the sort of place you’d go with a group of friends,
not to get it on.
Hmm unless you took one of the lower bedrooms below.

awanmulan

Love the dry bathroom concept

aabawanmulan_4

Rain shower, no less!

bawanmulan_7

Just liked this pic of the corridor so much i had to put it up :xlaughing:

bawanmulan_2

Sueann. Fashion Directors can chop garlic too yo

bawanmulan_16

Ming was posing at lightning speed while i tried taking natural shots.
Oh yeah, i mentioned this was a girlie trip.
Well Ming’s one of the girls anyway.

bawanmulan_15

Many pictures in my cam of Ming being a domestic diva

bawanmulan_3

Btw, these were all authentic pictures of him while he did chores in the kitchen!

bawanmulan_18

Myra was so sweet to give us personalized jars with M&Ms inside

abawanmulan_8

Jia Wei doing the chicken.
We heart the easy electrical BBQ tho i’m sure manly men will protest.

abawanmulan_9

Makan time!

abawanmulan_5

Me and some red. Sarah and some choc cake.
Btw Sarah and i will be playing with Deer Society at Daikanyama on Oct 1st! *end plug*

Hmm ok there’s this story about the choc cake that i will just ADMIT here cos i’m shameless like that.
Everyone was just GOING for the cake after dinner,
whereas i prefer having it later at night as if it’s supper.
Jiawers and Sarah suggested i wrap it in tissue and HIDE it in the fridge so no cake monster will get it.
The next morning i opened the fridge somehow expecting to see the piece still there…
but it was gone!
“Who took my chocolate cake?! SOMEONE took my chocolate cakeeeee!” i lamented.
Sarah: Your chocolate cake..? Didn’t you eat it last night? Joyce. I SAW you eating it last night!!!
Me: *hazy drunk memory returns in bits* hmm…. you may be right…. :p

abawanmulan_3

We played some games after dinner.
Memorable bits:
– asking Myra rather embarrassing questions about Fahmi that even *i* didn’t want to know the answers to
– getting everyone to say “WOOHOO” everytime someone said Myra’s name

abawanmulan_4

– Claudia farting way too much

abawanmulan_1

– Sarah having to drink through a scuba mask

abawanmulan_12

Ming saja want to try posing with mask

abawanmulan_6

Poyol la Claudia ni…

abawanmulan_2

The tequila finished

abawanmulan_13

Like Didi says, Claudia is so lucky she’s so pretty cos she’s like a haiwan (read: animal)

abawanmulan_14

Everyone started passing out one by one…

abawanmulan_15

abawanmulan_16

Last 4 standing…

I went looking for Sueann in one of the rooms and thought she was sleeping in bed,
was about to poke her when Sarah JUMPED in front of me and whispered,
“NO! It’s Didi! She’ll PUNCH YOU!”

Fect, damn scared we both ran out quietly haha.

Turned out Sueann was in the bathroom and entertained us with a pole dance after.
No videos were allowed.

Next day i woke up to see a slickly-oiled Ming in the tightest skimpiest swimming trunks i’d ever seen strutting into the bedroom.
I was last to wake up… at 9:30am (these ppl are crazy!)
Wish i could have slept longer zzzzz but felt like i was missing out so i got up.

aabawanmulan_3

aabawanmulan_2

Buddy Up & Go On HOLIDAY!!!

Comments (0) Sponsored Post

If there’s ONE thing in my Top 5 List of Best Things Eva,
it’ll be to go on holiday with a group of buddies!
The laughter, going all crazy, making memories, getting closer…
is priceless   :xheart2:

My Bali trip with my four Lovelies is still one of the best holidays of our lives.
It was the first holiday we’d all taken the effort to go on together (coinciding our leave for each of our different jobs was tough!) and spending 5 days with some of my favourite people in the world was absolute heaven.
Read about the post *here*

Bali with Lovelies

Bali

In the summer of 2011, Yishyene and i flew to Amsterdam for a lil holiday, just the two of us.
We ate lots of great food, sat by the canal,
waved at boats, sat in Vondelpark for hours,
explored nice restaurants recommended by Wallpaper,
laughed at bus stops, made friends with strangers,
and took lots of funny pictures all over the city!

A few months ago, i took a girlie trip to Laos!
We cycled all over Vientiane, bought vintage figurines and jewelry,
ate yummy cheap Laotian food at the night market,
jumped like little kids in a bouncy castle,
tubed down the river in Vang Vieng,
did yoga with the mist floating in between jutting hills as our scenery,
attempted to find a cave,
saw little village children swimming naked in the river,
hiked to a massive waterfall,
and oh so many things!!!

One of the newer experiences i’ve recently had was so attend music festivals in England last year.
It’s so amazing that i WISH so badly i did it much earlier!
Imagine spending the whole day dancing,
getting high on music,
watching some of my favourite bands,
and running around like little kids all day long.
I had such an awesome time at Wireless festival with Melissa, Nadia and their friends last year,
i want to do it all over again!!!

Going on holidays with girlies… just makes me want to go on MORE HOLIDAYS!
I love Clem, but i love my gurl time too   :xwinky:

One problem that may crop up for some people is that everyone earns a different amount… so it’s difficult to plan a trip if budget expectations differ too much.
Which is so sad!
We all just want to go on holiday together!
It’s perfectly alright to go somewhere close by (= cheaper) but you must admit being immersed in a new and exotic place just adds on to the experience and excitement!

If you’re aching to go on a holiday with your buddies,
there’s a MAJOR chance for you to do so!
Without spending any money!
(well, except shopping and food la)

Imagine being able to choose where you want to go,
and taking your best friends with you!
I WANT THIS TOO!!!!

There’s something that just popped up online that you may well be interested in…
i mean, whose interest won’T be piqued by this?!

Guess what… Great Eastern is celebrating its 103rd anniversary and they’re giving away cash and trips worth more than RM55,000!!! Did you know they’ve been around for more than a century? :xwinky:

aagebud_3

Grand Prize – win a themepark holiday of your choice above!
Take your pick!

Second and Third Prize winners get to go on fabulous shopping and beach holidays respectively.
Think Bangkok, Bali or even Club Med in Bintan, Indonesia.
And you get to bring 3 buddies along. Woohoo!!!

And as if that’s not enough there’ll be cash given out every week as well   :xsurprised:
Which snowballs as the weeks go by!   :xsurprised:

Isn’t that nuts… someone’s gonna be winning cash every single week till early December when this ends!
And that could be you   :xlaughing:

I will never lose my ‘lah’

Comments (19) Fairy Love

In conjunction with Malaysia Day
i thought i’d write about something that i told someone last week.

I get comments from people saying if i want my blog to go even more international,
i should drop my Malaysian slang cos people overseas don’t ‘get’ it.
But i protest against it.
I’m proud of our usage of particular malay and chinese words thrown in,
like how i always use layan, cemerlang, takkan, etc.

I can say i speak proper English,
but once in a while i’d still throw in a few words that English just CANNOT replace.
I even say it to Clem all the time so he just has to get USED to it and know what it means, instead of me changing the way i speak.
My current throwback in replacement of ‘really?’ is ‘ya kah?’
Some people think it’s weird but i personally think it’s wonderful and how many people can use and understand these words?

Only Malaysians!

After my extensive traveling, there’s still no place like home.
I love Malaysia and i’m really passionate about the country and how there is so much talent and ability to change the way we do things or increase the level of creativity here.
I’m really proud of all these young Malaysians whose strive to be independant in their individual industries.

People ask why i don’t just move overseas cos i’d look like the type who would love it and be able to make it work.
Thing is… i don’t want to go.
I want to stay.
If i’m apparently so good at raising the level in a certain industry or subject, why do it elsewhere?
I want to do it here and contribute to MY country.
Not someone else’s.

So i just want to say Happy Malaysia Day!

Be proud of your country.
Be proud of your heritage
cos everything you are today is due to the fact you grew up here.
Yes, there are many things we need to change.
But we all have to be agents of that change.

Laitong: New Works 2011 @ NN Gallery, Ampang

Comments (0) Art

I went for Uncle Laitong’s art exhibition launch last weekend
(i know! it was a week ago and i haven’t had time till now to blog bout it!)

alaiton_18

Laitong is one of Malaysia’s premier and pioneering artists,
with 7 solo exhibitions under his belt in the last decade.
I blogged about another of his exhibitions i went to in 2008 *here*

[paragraph below stolen from Dik]
His award winning mural adorns both front sides of the Museum Negara
and his real genius was his commercial application of art as the creative & marketing head behind all the Dunhill “Style, Quality & Excellence”, Peter Stuyvesant, Perillys & even the Marlboro ads from the 70s – 90s which was instrumental in leapfrogging Rothmans International to become the No 1 FMCG company in Malaysia & lots of Asia Pacific which BAT eventually bought over in 1999.

alaiton_5

Uncle Laitong and i   :xhappy:

alaiton_17

His current collection consists of 23 works titled “Our Beautiful Earth”.
I was at his house when my Aunt G was back in KL during Christmas/CNY
and saw him working on this collection then.
Was very impressed at how he paints directly onto the canvas
using no sketches and just plain intuition.

alaiton_16

I love love love his work cos they’re the sort of paitings which hold a myriad of colours and shapes which unfold gracefully across the canvas amidst its bustle.
I could stare at them for hours, and still discover different shapes and details every time!
