Sometimes the small things you do makes a difference.
Sounds so cliche but that’s because it’s true.

When i take the Penchala Link toll, i’d intentionally pay cash,
just so i can smile at the toll booth people.
Imagine how bored they must be sitting there for hours,
collecting money!
And imagine how many people who pass smile at them.
It’s so simple, but i appreciate it when a stranger smiles at me,
so i thought i’d do the same.

And i made it into a habit.
Even when i’m super grouchy, i’d try to wake up a smile while handing over my RM2.
After a while, i was able to recognise all the regular staff,
and they’d always smile when they see my face pop out of the car window.
There’s a chubby Malay guy with small eyes.
There’s a fair girl who always wears colourful eyeshadow.
Clem suggested i memorize their names even.

There was one day when i was having an extra blah day.
And for once, the toll girl smiled brightly at me and said,
“Wah! Adik pakai cantik hari ini yeah!”

It might have been her compliment (cos i do love my clothes so!)
It might have been her big smile.

But it made me feel better.

And i thought that’s nice… my smile went around, came back, and made ME feel better instead of my intention of doing it the other way around

So try smiling at a stranger today.
Your cleaning lady.
Your security guard.
The guy you buy lunch or newspapers from.

And especially, the toll booth people
