Restaurants Yeast, Bait, and LOTS more… FOOD

If you’ve noticed, i’ve got into the habit of compiling all my food pictures into a folder, then blogging them when i have the time to. I like it much better this way… it gives me a clearer idea of what i’ve been putting into my mouth. The only thing is, after uploading all the pictures here, i realize how MUCH i eat and am a little bit disgusted slash surprised slash embarrassed! I know i’m VERY LUCKY that my metabolic rate is considered pretty awesome compared to other women my age, although i do force myself to go for Powerplate twice a week so that things don’t get too jiggly everywhere.

But besides that, i have thought to myself before that: “As long as i have enough money to buy myself whatever food i fancy, i think i’ll be happy for the rest of my life.” Traveling to countries like Myanmar have rearranged my perspective that living in a city like KL has its beautiful blessings that we easily get our hands on whatever food we desire like Japanese, Italian, Chinese, Korean, etc .

I’ve started dining in Yeast (Telawi, Bangsar) more often. Went there for dinner with Aps where we both ordered the same dish of salmon and it was truly sublime. We didn’t even talk while enjoying the first half of it. It sat on creamed spinach and three types of sauces. The kitchen team are all French, as is the general atmosphere and interior. I made friends with Francois (the head waiter?) there cos i have general respect for the French who choose to live in Asia – they are the French who are more adventurous and honestly love South East Asia.

Seeing it’s French and a good restaurant at that, i brought Clem back to have a weekend brunch one day. We had the croque madame which was SO good, and a decent spinach quiche. Clem said it reminds him of simple French food he misses back home.

Also in Telawi area, is Bait, where i sometimes go for meetings. During a lunch with Aishah one day, i decided to go for their oysters and a glass of white. Sometimes you just gotta give in to your desires even tho you feel a tad guilty about having wine in the afternoon.

I tried their lunch set of vongole. Aishah had fish and chips.

Another day she had their chicken wings

Oh, and this is something to shout about! Bait stocks Cielo Dolci gelato, and it really reminds me of the ones i had in Italy! Cielo Dolci has a standalone store in Paradigm mall.

Had duck pancakes with Tai Yong at Village Roast Duck in Bangsar Village. It was good, and a large portion, plus we were greedy enough to order another two dishes (!!) so i took a bit of leftover duck home, which Clem ate with French mayo and claimed was fab (the restaurant forgot to pack the plum sauce -_-).

One sunny Saturday, Habsah invited me to Eaton (not a restaurant sorry haha) where her sisters and her prepared some amazing dishes! Steph and i had their famous sarawak laksa, filipino-style egg fried with aubergine (oh god i need to learn how to make this) and some serious rojak; while we listened in rapt attention to their captivating stories and looked at glamourous pictures of them in the 70s. I wish i was at my peak in the 70s. I think i would have fit in better!

I went for Clem’s company dinner at Tamarind Springs the same day i ate at Habsah’s house. Man i was really stuffed that day…

I still eat Japanese at least once a week. I dread the period when i’m pregnant and can’t succumb to sashimi… This was in Rakuzen after i had a workout.

Another day i ordered the oyster hot pot while having lunch with Mary. It’s massive tho, and something i could share with another person on a rainy day. It’s honestly too hot nowadays to have hot soup for lunch, you feel it too don’t you!?

Tried these pumpkin fritters for the first time in Fat Spoon. SO GREAT. It makes you feel less guilty for eating fried food if it’s something healthy like pumpkin!

My longest-standing favourite dessert there is their cempedak popiah + vanilla ice cream. I tried their latest passionfruit crepes too, which were crispy and quite good, but a bit sour for my liking. Then again, i generally don’t eat sour foods.

And this… is what i ALWAYS order when i’m in Fat Spoon – spicy beef soup with nissin noodles. It’s come to a point i tell the staff – “My usual, please.”

One random Sunday i documented all the food i snacked on – Fat Spoon noodles, homemade spinach soup, pavlova from Souka, and leftover broccoli and rice. The desserts at Souka are WONDERFUL. Every time i need to buy desserts for a house party i go there now. Or if i need one dessert for my private house party = just me.

Surprisingly, one of the nicest seafood pastas i like is in La Bodega. It’s al dente, tasty and generous with shellfish. Oh i pity people who are allergic to seafood! (please don’t let me be jinxing myself by saying that)

I’ve been to the Majestic for high tea during Myra’s baby shower, and again this week for Swiss Line‘s event where we were treated to the lunch buffet after. There was one person complaining about the food… but i think they were just not very grateful of what they had in front of them. Regardless, the presentation was beautiful and i wish i had more time to sit there and really stuff myself. Heh.

I LOVE ARTICHOKES. Tried a bit of everything (that was in ONE small section), including some Asian dishes which i didn’t take pictures of. I heard that the buffet lunch costs something really reasonable like RM65 (i could be wrong cos my memory sucks.)

I drop by The Food Company in TTDI (same row as CIMB bank and Star Enterprise) every now and then to pick up some frozen seafood and herbs and things. Prices there are slightly lower than in the supermarket, and i like supporting neighbourhood businesses.

Cod fish i bought from there was steamed at home and laden with braised ginger and soya sauce the way my mummy taught me how. I personally think it’s the best way to appreciate cod cos all its juices and flavour are retained (i just rub a bit of sugar on it before steaming).

Teehee. Layaning myself in the kitchen as i made pastry for some quiche.

You don’t see me venturing into baking cos i just don’t have enough space in my current kitchen to store more appliances. And i know once i start baking, i’m gonna want/need a lot! So i’m swearing it off till we move to the bigger place, and there… will evolve the Amazing Fairy Kitchen of Goodness.

I HAD to make quiche cos Clem suddenly demanded that HE WANTED QUICHE. And me being the ever-entertaining girlfriend (most of the time), went about looking for a Manu Fiedel recipe and even went so far as to make the pastry from scratch cos the French do it that way. Or so i thought. Clem was surprised that i made it myself cos he said his mum just buys the pastry. Erm, maybe i don’t know where to buy trust the pastry here?

I’ve been very healthy (or so i think) since i’ve returned to freelancing in October and have regular sleeping hours, plus a fixed time of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most breakfasts are spent at home while poring over emails so i prep something that doesn’t take much time – like cut strawberries, bananas and organic blueberry cereal.

I cooked some duck confit at home! Friends always ask how i do it and… the truth is i CHEAT. Clem and i bring back tins of duck confit like it’s gold every time we return from France, and all i have to do is fry it till the skin is crispy, pan-fry some potatoes with the duck fat and prep some salad. Then i get to store all the extra duck fat for future potato servings too. Sometimes its too much (fat) to keep so i give some to my brother and his woman.

+ + + + + +

If i could, i’d cook more fish and vege dishes, but Clem likes his CHEESE and SALTY foods. So it’s like layaning a child you know. You gotta cook them something they’d eat and also is good for them so i mostly interchange between fish and ‘naughty’ dishes like carbonara and lasagna.

Here i tried a recipe for some nacho lasagna that uses lots of cheese and carrots (that’s the good part coming in). The recipe had all these women quoting that their men loved it, hence why i tried it, and ’twas true! Clem loved it! If you want to know how i find recipes online (when i’m not feeling my cookbooks) i google, find a few, then MERGE the ingredients and steps for what i think would taste better for the same recipe. Takes time but… i guess that’s how food is love.

+ + + + + +

I tried a French vegetable recipe using endives (only because i spotted it in Village Grocer) that are first cooked on the stove, then baked with ham and cheese (the cheese is because of Clem again). I threw the potatoes in cos i was too lazy to think of a substantial side dish to feed the hungry man.

+ + + + + +

I keep smoked salmon in the fridge so when it tickles my fancy, i whip up some smoked salmon and cheese pasta for myself. I go so far as to cook half the salmon, and use the rest as it is JUST SO i get two different flavours of salmon.

+ + + + + +

One weekend, i splurged on a bulk of tenderloin medallions (in Jason’s Food Hall in BSC) for my family. Mostly as a ‘thank you’ dinner for ย my father and brother for helping me clean up my new car before i drove it.

Also did some baked broccoli dish that is claimed to be the best way to cook broccoli. They lied. It was okay. I prefer it steamed.

Also got some pain au chocolatย for dessert from ground floor in BSC cos they are so good and saves my time to concentrate on cooking the main meal. Only around RM2 each.

OMG i’m done! Hope this post inspires you to eat better! TO YUMMIER AND GREATER FOOD! *whips out fairy wand in direction of pretend-world of beyond*

This is the best way to work up an appetite. Look at the photos of food, then save on appetisers at the restaurant. Just dive straight into the main meal! Lol!
