It felt like the last Hennessy Artistry (at Aloha) just took place, and i’m writing about yet another one!
Either time is flying by too quickly. Or Hennessy is going mad with throwing parties.
I think it’s both.
Quick recap on Hennessy Artistry events that have been happening so far this year were on April 18th at Zouk (that had DJ Keri, DJ Andrew K and VJ Callen taking the limelight) and the last one at Aloha on May 31st with Point Blanc and the Bangkok Invaders.
This was taken in Aloha then:
Jeremy, AdamPoserPan, Azana, me, FaiTheMai
Yeah, i know i’m so not dressed hip hop cos i was going for WILD! after that.
Past events aside, the upcoming Hennessy Artistry event will be held next week with an even bigger lineup of artistes performing this time round (i have no idea why, perhaps because of bigger venue?)
I love how Hennessy always surprises me with artistes i’ve never heard of, but (prollie cos i’m such a noob in this genre and) when i mention it to someone, they’d go, “Oh yeah, i know of them!” or “Oh my god, i’m definitely going!”
0_o
This time round, at least i know one group who are performing.
And shame on me if i didn’t cos they’re homegrown!
Top L-R: Uno (turntables), JD (bass), AJ (guitar)
Bottom L-R: Moots (vocals), Rudy (drums)
Close your mouth Moots, country flies might go in.
Pop Shuvit has been around since 2001- with success since their debut album, Take It and Shuvit, was released. ESPN caught wind of their first single, Skaters’ Anthem, and bought the rights to use it in their Summer X-Games that broadcasted in millions of homes worldwide.
Their second album Here & Now kicked off hit singles Old School Rocka (who can forget that chorus that has embedded itself into our heads?) and Journey, garnering them two awards at the 2005 Hitz.FM English Top Ten Awards – #1 Song of the Year (for Journey) and Best Rock Act.
As if fans in their home country ain’t enough, the Japan market embraced the group to the extent two albums were released only in the land of the rising sun – Shuvit Remixes in 2004, and Amped and Dangerous in 2006.
Their latest (and 3rd studio) album is Freakshow Volume 1: Tales of the Travelling Tunes and involves collaborations with reputable names such as Dandee from Silksounds, Emmet from Butterfingers, Roshan from K-Town Clan, Ras Muhammad and Inspectah Deck from Wu-Tang Clan.
(psst, they’re also in the running for Favourite Malaysian Artiste at the upcoming MTV Asia Awards)
Catch their arsenal of crunching guitars, pounding and funked-out hip hop beats at the party!
Next up is Taiwanese hip hop group, Machi.
I can’t seem to find a group picture of them so i chose one of their nine members.
Founder Jeff Huang.
For the guys, this here is Melody Yeung.
Considered as one of Asia’s leading music production groups with big-names involved (Jeffrey Huang, Jay Chou, A-mei, Stanley Huang, Jolin Tsai, Vanness Wu, Elva Hsiao, Coco Lee, Brandy, Nicky Lee, Melody Yeung) and tight ties with Virgin EMI, Sony and Warner Music; Machi has released three albums to date.
Their most well-known collaboration has to be with Missy Elliott after meeting her in New York. Missy was so taken by Taiwanese rap that a a remix was put into works, resulting in a mash of Machi’s Jump 2003 with Missy’s Work It called Work It, Jump 2003 (Okay i’ll stop about Missy now, this *is* about Machi after all).
Floss P of Dr Dre’s Aftermath music label has also worked with Machi, producing You Can’t Do It on their album 2nd Opus in July 2004.
Machi:
Jolin Tsai/Jay Chou/Machi:
I was surfing through their website and Machi founder Jae Chong seems to be the only one blogging there for now… and i think you should click it cos it’s quite entertaining and i ended up reading it thus getting distracted from continuing this post!
Okay back to this!
DJ Latin Prince will also be performing next Saturday.
(the moment i clicked on his myspace i was like, “Wow. Dude.”)
Spinning since the 80s, DJ Latin Prince churned music till he landed spots in clubs in San Francisco Bay Area like X Factory, City Nights, The X, Club Mirage and many more. He went on to having a slot on radio station KMEL, was National Director for Rap Promotions (aiding Mary J. Blige, Roots, Field Mob and many other break records) and formed Urban Jungle Music on his own.
He worked with Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz (who went double platinum), Ying Yang Twins (who went gold and platinum) and breaking other artistes like Pitbull, Chyna White and Teedra Moses into the scene.
Here’s a vid of him opening for 50 Cent. Phwoar.
One artiste i know a lot of people will be looking forward to… is Flo Rida.
There is no way have not heard of this man’s songs.
No. Way.
Flo Rida’s Low:
Flo Rida’s In The Ayer:
I mean, HELL, even *i’m* looking forward to next Sat now!!!
Born of a multi-talented musician father, Flo Rida had been encouraged to express himself through music since a young age. Even his seven sisters did the same by forming a gospel group. When one of his sisters passed away from bronchitis, he vowed to use his God-given talents to give back in a way where others can benefit.
Reading through his journey is a hip hop fairy tale in itself (I really didn’t mean to put the words ‘hip hop’ and ‘fairy’ next to each other. I swear i didn’t). From rapping in a group called Groundhoggz since 9th Grade, to selling mixtapes, traveling the country, and catching the attention of DeVante Swing (read: big break coming!); Flo Rida’s story is one of hard work and perseverance.
He admits to undergoing struggles in L.A. for three years, “I was literally on the streets, at times promoting myself by myself. I always had the drive to push my own music. People tend to help you more when they see that you promote yourself. They know you’re serious then.”
In 2006, Flo Rida decided to return to Miami after receiving calls from Poe Boy Entertainment’s CEO called E-Class (o_0) and signed with them and Atlantic. He worked on debut album Mail On Sunday all of 2007 to release it early this year.
His first single Low received cult-status, shooting to the top of almost every chart globally (Top 40 radio, Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and Hot RingMasters chart, Soundscan’s Digital Song chart, iTunes, Napster, Rhapsody, MySpace, MTV’s TRL, BET’s 106 & Park) even before he could launch!
Utter. Madness.
Providing visuals for the party will be Hennessy Artistry favourite VJ Callen, also part of collective Altered Image. Finally the crane behind you is gone, ey?
