KL is always packed with events week in and week out, and one that promises a blend of sound, visual innovation and delectable cocktails, would be the title i wrote above – Hennessy Artistry @ Aloha club this 31st May.
This will be the second phase of the Hennessy Artistry tour in 2008, the first being on 18th April at Zouk, which i blogged about a little while back. After trying all the Hennessy VSOP world city cocktails there, i went home to find a gazillion party pictures in my digicam (0_o) which i posted when writing about the party after.
Of course, the pictures there are nothing compared to heaps others of guests partying the night away which you can view on the Hennessy Artistry Malaysia website.
If you didn’t already know (it’s embedded in my head by now!) Hennessy Artistry is a global music campaign that promotes mixing various genres (kinda like how they’re mixing Hennessy into new fusions yeah?) and the very cool thing is the campaign spans from New York to Shanghai.
Guests can look forward to three carefully chosen acts this upcoming event at Aloha.
First up is Point Blanc.
You must have heard his 2007 No.1 hit single ‘Ipohmali’ before, and it’s either you adore it or detest it.
Either way, if you listen to Malaysian radio, you have DEFINITELY heard it before.
Another of his songs you probably would have heard is street anthem “KL Lheng Chai”
Point Blanc burst onto the local music scene when he was one quarter of hip-hop group Poetic Ammo. I remember i was in high school when Poetic Ammo came out with their album “It’s a Nice Day to be Alive” and i actually took to it. I can just imagine some friends going, “What?! Joyce took to hip hop at one point in her life?!”
Hey, that 1999 album was some serious business okay. It won Best English Album and Best New English Artiste at the AIM awards back then!
Poetic Ammo released two more albums after “It’s A Nice Day To Be Alive” – “The World is Yours” (2000) and “Return Of The Boombox” (2003).
In between that, did you know Point Blanc founded rock band Pop Shuvit in 2001?
Anyway, the group split and each went to do his own thing. Point Blanc moved on to setting up his own record label and artiste management company, Voyeur Records, in 2003. Four years later he released his album “Straight to the Point” in which the single Ipohmali is. That music video alone has been viewed over 100,000 times online.
His real name is Nicholas Ong (sounds eerily like my brother’s name -_-) and you can stalk him on his blog *here*
Another act for the night are a duo hailing from British Columbia and Thailand – Bangkok Invaders.
As i was Googling the Bangkok Invaders cos i’m curious who they are and know nothing about hip hop, look whose blog was on the first page > *click*
I should’ve guessed you‘ll be gracing the event with your presence since its hip hop. And you’re… all hip hop and stuff… yo. Okay i’ll stop.
Bangkok Invaders consist of DJs Ono, Meeh and Dandee Silksounds who blend their unique musical influences producing a set that features the hottest hip-hop, reggae and R&B. So if you’re not a hip hop fan, you still have elements of reggae (i is loving Bob) and R&B (shake it!).
Reputed for having the energy, attitude and records to mix up that raw street vibe which is the soul of ANY hip-hop party, earning them street cred that has propelled them to play at parties in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
You can only imagine the events they play at in Bangkok then. Hold your breath, here goes – they opened for 50 Cent & G-Unit Tour (2006), opening act and official afterparty DJ for Jay-Z and Rihanna’s 2007 tour, MTV Asia Awards Official DJ, Official AfterParty DJ for Black-Eyed Peas 2006/2007 Tour, and Official AfterParty DJ for Beyonce World Tour 2007.
Phwoar.
I’m actually looking forward to them now…
They’re so renowned, Sony used DJ Ono for a pretty fly TVC:
Providing visuals for the night is VJ Callen again.
I say again cos he performed at the first Hennessy Artistry event for this year at Zouk.
(Dude… we got to get a new picture of you man!
Everyone’s picture so gaya… yours has a crane leaning over the top of your head somewhat…
Fail la. Luckily you’re so veteran they let you give pictures like this -_-)
Back by popular demand, Callen continues his collaboration with Hennessy Artistry by showcasing scintillating visual wizardry to accompany the sounds for the night and heighten the atmosphere altogether.
You see him everywhere really, as he’s one of the club scene’s premier visual magicians. Most recent event he got asked to perform was at the Missy Elliot concert in Genting last weekend.
One third of the group Altered Image, Callen will be sure to encapsulate us with visual sensory overload he’s known to do.
Delicious Hennessy Miami and Hennessy Shanghai city cocktails going around all night long.
Point Blanc rocking it.
Anticipated performance by Bangkok Invaders.
Visual wizardry by VJ Callen.
How does one get in to this party?!
So. Easy.

I’m so there ๐
Thanks for this; I stopped keeping up with Malaysian music a while ago, but Point’s work here is great. I love that irreverent line about rocking Bata!
